What Does Your Writing Space Look Like?

By: Ebonye Gussine Wilkins

In an ideal world, my writing space would be a desk in a comfortable back-supporting chair in a room lit with natural light overlooking the Pacific Ocean on the cliffs of Big Sur, California. Maybe a few bookshelves, and some old typewriters for inspiration and decoration. A few large, beautiful family photos printed on metal sheets would make the photos seem like they are lit from within. There would be a comfortable couch in a corner with a lamp so that I can read. I’d also have a wireless printer set up and maybe even a telephone. I’d have a fancy espresso machine and cute over-size coffee mugs so that I can pretend I am in a cafe, but not fight for outlets.

In reality, I work at a touchscreen computer, usually in the dark while my family sleeps. If I write during the daytime, I have Frasier running in the background courtesy of Netflix. A pile of editing books are stacked up high above my head and ideas for writing float around my head waiting for a place to settle down.

If you could design and work in your ideal living space, what would it be like? What would you have in that room?
